A shocking new investigation has uncovered alarming levels of toxic cadmium in jewelry marketed as sterling silver on major online marketplaces, raising concerns about the safety of inexpensive accessories sold by third-party vendors.
According to an investigation by The Sunday Times, independent laboratory tests conducted by the Birmingham Assay Office found that some jewelry advertised as “925 sterling silver”—which should legally contain at least 92.5% silver—contained dangerously high amounts of cadmium instead.
💍 A Ring That Was Almost Entirely Cadmium
One of the most alarming findings involved a ring sold as 925 sterling silver on Amazon.
Laboratory analysis revealed that the ring was actually made of 92.3% cadmium, a highly toxic heavy metal. This is more than 9,000 times the maximum legal cadmium limit of 0.01% permitted in the UK and the European Union for jewelry.
Researchers also tested charms purchased through a seller on TikTok Shop, finding they contained 33% cadmium—nearly 3,300 times the legal limit. Following the investigation, both platforms reportedly removed the flagged listings.

Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal classified as a human carcinogen after long-term occupational exposure through inhalation. Unlike many chemicals, cadmium can accumulate in the body over time, making repeated exposure a concern.
Long-term exposure has been linked to:
