Is your head itchy? Here are the main causes.

The main causes of scalp itching

1 – Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis: the most frequent causes.

Dandruff, those unsightly little white flakes, is often caused by excess sebum or the use of harsh products. It causes bothersome itching, and the more you scratch, the more irritated your scalp becomes.

Seborrheic dermatitis, on the other hand, is a chronic inflammation that manifests as red patches covered with thick, yellowish scales. Besides the scalp, it can also affect the eyebrows, the backs of the ears, and even the nostrils.

Use specific shampoos containing ketoconazole, salicylic acid or zinc pyrithione.

If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, consult a dermatologist for appropriate treatment.

2- Psoriasis: When the body attacks itself

Scalp psoriasis is an autoimmune disease characterized by the appearance of thick, red, scaly plaques. These plaques are itchy, and scratching can cause bleeding.

Effective solutions:

Apply corticosteroid lotions and use medicated shampoos.

In cases of severe flare-ups, oral treatment may be necessary.

Learn to manage your stress, as it often worsens symptoms.
