The current research has been conducted in animal models, and human clinical trials have not yet begun. Before this technology becomes available to patients, researchers must demonstrate that it is both safe and effective in people.
While the results are highly encouraging, much more research is needed before this approach can become part of routine cancer care.
Beyond Glioblastoma
Scientists believe this technology could eventually be used for many neurological diseases where the blood-brain barrier limits treatment, including:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Other aggressive brain tumors
- Certain rare neurological disorders
If successful, focused ultrasound could transform how medicines are delivered to the brain.
The Bottom Line
This study represents an exciting advance in brain cancer research. By using MRI-guided focused ultrasound to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier, researchers successfully delivered microRNA-based therapy directly into glioblastoma tumors in mice, slowing cancer growth and improving survival.
Although this treatment is still experimental and has not yet been tested in humans, it offers a promising new strategy that could one day improve outcomes for patients with glioblastoma and other difficult-to-treat brain diseases.
