Growing an Avocado Plant from Seed: In Water & Soil | Step-by-Step Guide

Love avocados? You can grow your own avocado plant right at home using just the seed! It’s a fun, rewarding process—and with a little patience, you’ll have a beautiful houseplant (and maybe even future fruit). Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to growing your avocado seed in both water and soil.

🥑 What You’ll Need:

  • 1 ripe avocado seed
  • Water
  • A glass or jar
  • Toothpicks
  • Small pot with soil (well-draining)
  • Sunlight

🌱 Method 1: Growing in Water (for root sprouting)

Step 1: Remove & Clean the Seed

  • Gently remove the seed from the avocado without cutting or damaging it.
  • Rinse off any fruit residue, but don’t remove the brown skin.

Step 2: Insert Toothpicks

  • Insert 3–4 toothpicks into the seed, spaced evenly around the middle.
  • These will act as supports to balance the seed on the rim of the glass.

Step 3: Place in Water

  • Suspend the seed over a glass of water, with the broad (bottom) end down and pointy end up.
  • Make sure the bottom is submerged in water by about 1–2 cm.

Step 4: Wait & Watch

  • Place in a warm, bright spot, but out of direct sunlight.
  • Change the water every 2–3 days to prevent mold.
  • In 2–8 weeks, you should see the seed crack and roots begin to grow, followed by a sprout at the top.
