The babies were born at 28 weeks and four days of pregnancy, more than 11 weeks before their due date, requiring immediate specialized care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Unlike most multiple pregnancies, these sisters are monozygotic quadruplets, meaning they all developed from a single fertilized egg.

Early in pregnancy, that one embryo split into four separate embryos, producing four babies with nearly identical genetic material.

Naturally conceived identical quadruplets are extraordinarily rare, with experts estimating they occur in approximately one in 15 million pregnancies.

Sharing One Placenta Increased the Risk

What made this pregnancy even more unusual was that all four babies shared a single placenta.

This rare condition can lead to serious complications because the babies compete for the same blood supply. Potential risks include:
