The therapeutic experiments in this study were performed in mice.
This does not mean that the hydrogel treatment has been proven to treat glioblastoma or other brain cancers in humans.
Human clinical studies would be needed before any such treatment could be considered for patients.
👤 What About Humans?
The discovery itself is especially interesting because researchers also found evidence of similar immune cell populations in human skull bone marrow.
However, the detailed functional lymphoid structures described and experimentally tested in the study were primarily characterized in mice.
Therefore, scientists still need to answer several major questions:
- Do humans have the same structures?
- Do they function in the same way?
- Can they recognize signals from the human brain?
- Can they be safely stimulated?
- Could targeting them improve treatment for brain cancer?
- Might they play a role in neurodegenerative diseases?
These questions remain open and will require further research.
🧠 Could This Matter for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s?
The discovery could also have implications beyond cancer.
Immune activity and inflammation are increasingly recognized as important areas of research in neurological diseases. Scientists are investigating how immune responses interact with conditions such as:

🧠 Long COVID and other neurological conditions involving immune processes
The researchers believe that understanding the skull–brain immune connection could open new avenues for studying these diseases.

The study has not demonstrated a treatment for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.
Instead, it provides a potentially important new biological framework for investigating how the immune system communicates with and monitors the brain.
