What Are MicroRNAs?
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are tiny molecules that naturally regulate gene activity inside cells.
Unlike traditional drugs that often target a single cancer pathway, microRNAs can simultaneously switch off multiple genes involved in:
- Tumor growth
- Cancer cell survival
- Cell invasion
- Resistance to treatment
This multi-target approach may be especially valuable for glioblastoma, which rapidly adapts to single-drug therapies.
Encouraging Results in Animal Studies
In the new study, researchers successfully delivered therapeutic microRNAs into glioblastoma tumors in mice.
The treatment:
- Successfully crossed the blood-brain barrier.
- Slowed tumor growth.
- Extended survival in laboratory animals.
- Required no invasive brain surgery for drug delivery.
These findings suggest that focused ultrasound could become a powerful platform for delivering advanced genetic therapies directly into the brain.
