6 Silent Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer Every Woman Should Know

Ovarian cancer is often referred to as the “silent disease” because its early symptoms are usually subtle and easy to mistake for common digestive or hormonal issues. Yet, recognizing these warning signs early can make a significant difference. When diagnosed in its earliest stages, treatment is generally more effective and survival rates are much higher.

Each year, approximately 7,400 women in the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Unfortunately, only about 20% of cases are detected before the disease has spread, highlighting the importance of knowing the symptoms and seeking medical advice if they persist.

Here are six warning signs that should never be ignored.

1. Feeling Full After Eating Only a Small Amount

Everyone occasionally loses their appetite or feels full after a large meal. However, if you consistently feel satisfied after eating only a few bites, it may be more than a digestive issue.

Early satiety can occur when an ovarian tumor or fluid buildup in the abdomen places pressure on the stomach, reducing its capacity. Many women describe feeling as though they have eaten a full meal despite consuming very little food.

If this sensation lasts for more than a couple of weeks or is accompanied by abdominal swelling, pain, or weight changes, it is important to consult a healthcare provider.

2. Unexplained Weight Loss or Weight Gain

Unexpected changes in body weight without changes in diet or physical activity should always be evaluated.

Some women with ovarian cancer lose weight because cancer cells alter the body’s metabolism or reduce appetite. Others may actually gain weight due to fluid accumulation in the abdomen, known as ascites, which can make clothing feel tighter and cause noticeable abdominal enlargement.

Sudden weight changes that cannot be explained deserve medical attention.

3. Unusual Changes in the Menstrual Cycle or Vaginal Bleeding

Changes in menstrual patterns can occur for many reasons, but abnormal bleeding should never be ignored.

Warning signs include:

  • Bleeding between menstrual periods.
  • Bleeding after menopause.
  • Unusually heavy or prolonged periods.
  • Vaginal discharge that differs in color, consistency, or amount from your normal pattern.

Research has shown that abnormal vaginal bleeding is reported by a portion of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Although these symptoms are often caused by non-cancerous conditions, they should always be assessed by a healthcare professional.
