Which Bacteria Were Linked to the Different Groups?
The researchers observed differences involving several bacterial genera, including Helicobacter, Selenomonas, and Lactobacillus, as well as other groups of microorganisms.
Importantly, the study was not simply looking for one “cancer-causing bacterium.”
Instead, scientists examined the overall composition of the oral microbiome—the community of microorganisms living in the mouth.
The pattern appeared to be more important than any single bacterium.
This is significant because the mouth and digestive system are closely connected. Researchers are investigating whether changes in the oral microbiome could reflect biological changes occurring farther down the digestive tract.
What Did the Study Actually Show?
The published study found that oral microbiome profiles could distinguish participants with gastric cancer from healthy controls with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.880 in one model.
The researchers also developed models that distinguished people with precancerous gastric conditions from controls, with an AUC of 0.943.
These numbers are encouraging from a research perspective, but they should not be interpreted as meaning that a mouthwash test is already an accurate diagnostic test for individuals.
The study was relatively small, and the researchers have called for larger and more diverse studies to confirm the findings.
What About a GastroPanel Blood Test?
Another non-invasive approach that has been investigated is the GastroPanel.
Unlike an endoscopy, GastroPanel uses a blood sample to measure biomarkers associated with the stomach, including pepsinogen I, pepsinogen II, gastrin-17, and antibodies against Helicobacter pylori.
These markers can provide information about certain conditions affecting the gastric mucosa, including atrophic gastritis and H. pylori infection, and may help identify people who could benefit from further evaluation.
However, GastroPanel should not be described as a simple blood test that directly “looks inside the stomach” or definitively detects stomach cancer.
Clinical guidelines have noted that blood biomarkers such as pepsinogens can help identify some people at increased risk of gastric disease, but their role in population-wide cancer screening remains limited and depends on the population and local cancer incidence.
