🌳 Hug a Tree? Science Says It Might Actually Calm Your Brain

It may sound unusual, but something as simple as touching—or even hugging—a tree could have real effects on your mental state. 🌿

Research published in Urban Forestry and Urban Greening found that physical contact with trees and natural surfaces can significantly lower cortisol, the hormone most closely linked to stress. Lower cortisol levels are associated with a calmer mind, reduced anxiety, and better overall emotional balance.

Much of this research builds on the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, often translated as “forest bathing.” Studies from Nippon Medical School show that even short periods spent in forests—especially when engaging physically with the environment—can reduce blood pressure, slow heart rate, and ease anxiety. 🌲
