My mind instantly jumped to the worst possibilities. Today, parents constantly hear frightening stories about drugs disguised as sweets, dangerous substances circulating in schools, and teenagers hiding things from adults. I barely slept that night.
The next day, I decided to investigate before accusing him unfairly. I searched online, compared photos, and even asked in a parenting forum. The answers varied wildly — some people thought they were airsoft pellets, others suggested cleaning products, reptile food, or moisture-absorbing balls used in packaging.
Finally, the mystery was solved.
The white balls were actually part of a reptile terrarium cleaning kit belonging to one of his classmates. My son had agreed to carry the supplies home after school because his friend had forgotten them during a biology club activity.
I felt both relieved and embarrassed.
That moment reminded me how quickly fear and suspicion can take over, especially when it comes to our children. Sometimes, what looks alarming has a completely innocent explanation. The experience also taught me something important: before panicking, it’s always better to communicate calmly, verify the facts, and avoid jumping to conclusions.
Still, I can admit one thing honestly — for a few hours, those tiny white balls terrified me more than anything I had found in that backpack before.
