Although many people believe it is just a common insect that appears by chance, the so-called drain fly — also known as the moisture fly or shower fly — is often a sign that something may be happening inside the home’s pipes. Its tiny size and slow flight make it easy to overlook at first, but when it starts appearing frequently in the bathroom or near the sink, it can become a constant nuisance.
This curious insect usually settles in places where there is accumulated moisture, organic residue, and poor ventilation. That is why bathrooms are one of its favorite spots. Although it is not considered a serious health threat in most cases, it may indicate cleaning or maintenance problems that should be addressed as soon as possible.
The shower fly has a very distinctive appearance. It is generally small, gray or dark brown in color, and has wings with a texture similar to that of a tiny moth. Unlike other flies, it does not usually travel long distances. It normally stays close to drains, damp walls, grates, or areas where water condensation exists.
Many people first notice tiny insects resting on bathroom walls or near the sink. Others detect an unpleasant odor coming from the pipes and shortly afterward discover the presence of these small flies. In some homes, water may also begin draining more slowly, which can further encourage their appearance.
