Could Menstrual Blood Hold the Key to Repairing Damaged Joints? Scientists Reveal a Surprising Breakthrough

What if something the body naturally sheds every month could one day help repair damaged joints?

It may sound unbelievable, but scientists have uncovered evidence that menstrual blood could play an important role in the future of regenerative medicine.

In a groundbreaking study published in Scientific Reports, researchers found that special cells present in menstrual blood release microscopic particles known as extracellular vesicles (EVs). These tiny biological messengers carry proteins, fats, and genetic material that allow cells to communicate with one another.

When researchers applied these extracellular vesicles to damaged cartilage cells in laboratory experiments, they observed remarkable effects. The vesicles encouraged chondrocytes—the specialized cells responsible for maintaining healthy cartilage—to produce more of the extracellular matrix, the protective framework that gives cartilage its strength and flexibility. At the same time, they appeared to reduce processes associated with cartilage breakdown.

This finding is particularly exciting because cartilage has a very limited ability to heal on its own. Once damaged by aging, injury, or diseases such as osteoarthritis, it often continues to deteriorate, leading to chronic pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
